A Bit of Pioneer Day History

Pioneer Day has been celebrated for many years in Pocatello, Idaho.  This article was published in the Idaho State Journal July 16, 1957, and says that the parade that year was, “Probably the largest parade in Pocatello history.”  The article did not identify the children on the float but one five year old boy kept the clipping all these years.  Shown as 2nd from the right on the float is Kirk Kirkham, former councilor in the University 2nd Stake, in Pocatello.  The float is proudly pulled by his father, Dale Kirkham in his brand new 1956 Mercury, a car he remembers as “The Most Beautiful Car”.  The float is headed west, and is shown in the photo emerging from the Center Street underpass as it enters downtown Pocatello.  This is the same route the parade will take this year for the celebration.
